Jiu-Jitsu & Submission Wrestling in Bloomsburg, PA
Jiu-Jitsu & Submission Wrestling at Bloomsburg Martial Arts Academy
At BMA, our Jiu-Jitsu and submission wrestling classes in Bloomsburg, PA focus on practical no-gi Jiu-Jitsu, grappling, wrestling, control, escapes, submissions, and standing back up safely. The style of grappling matters less than usability and effectiveness. No martial arts politics are welcome.
Students learn how takedowns, clinch work, guard work, pins, scrambles, submissions, and defensive habits connect into a functional grappling system for MMA, competition, self-defense, and everyday training goals.
Beginners are welcome. If you are new to grappling, coaches will help you start with positions, movement, partner safety, and simple techniques before you move into harder rounds.
Practical No-Gi Grappling
Our no-gi program incorporates Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ concepts, submission wrestling, and wrestling into a practical grappling system. Training without the gi helps students learn grips, pressure, balance, and control that carry directly into MMA and submission grappling.
If you are new to grappling, read our beginner first-class guide, then review the current Jiu-Jitsu and submission wrestling schedule or fill out the training waiver.
What You'll Learn
Classes build core grappling skills: takedowns, sprawls, clinch control, top pressure, guard passing, guard retention, escapes, submissions, transitions, scrambling, and standing back up. Students learn both how to attack and how to stay calm and defend from bad positions.
Jiu-Jitsu for MMA, Competition & Self-Defense
Grappling is a major part of MMA training because it teaches students how to control where the fight happens. Competition is available for students who want it, but it is not required. You can train to compete, get in shape, build confidence, or learn practical self-defense.
What Is Submission Wrestling?
Our Bloomsburg submission wrestling classes focus on practical no-gi grappling that carries over to jiu-jitsu, wrestling, MMA, and self-defense. Submission wrestling, also known as submission grappling or no-gi, describes the part of martial arts and combat sports focused on clinch work, ground fighting, and submissions without the use of a jacket or gi.
The sport of submission wrestling brings together techniques from folk wrestling, catch wrestling, Luta Livre Esportiva, freestyle wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu, and Sambo.
It is also known for techniques that are restricted in some other arts or competitions, such as heel hooks, neck cranks, toe holds, wrist locks, and finger locks.
Jiu-Jitsu Background
Jiu-jutsu is a martial art from which other styles, such as Judo and BJJ, were derived. Jiu-jitsu includes immobilization, throwing, striking, defense, and sometimes the use of small weapons. Students also study technique theory, Japanese history and terminology, the human body, and some healing practices.
Jiu-jitsu was developed for use in warfare but ironically translates to “gentle art.” This is because the techniques require very little of your own strength and use your opponent's strength against the opponent.
Although it has been around for hundreds of years, the Japanese did not start using the term Jiu-jutsu until the 17th century, where it was used to encompass a variety of grappling styles.
